Today Deirdre's dad came in to visit our classroom. He told us all about the different types of farms in Ireland. We prepared questions to ask him and used our clear voices to ask the questions. He took in items used on the farm such as whats used for milking the cows and tags for the cows ears, We really enjoyed learning about the farm in Autumn. Thank you Anthony! We have created a lovely autumnal display in our room. We really used our imaginations when taking in items for it. Well done everyone!!!!
This months Áistear theme is surrounding Clothes and Autumn. The stations this month are: Role-Play - Children are exploring the story of Cinderella which we are covering in the Wonderland programme. We are using the language we have learned in Oral Language Development. New words to us have been carriage, coachman, limousine, stepmother, stepsister among many others. We have divided out the roles in the story, dressed up for our appropriate parts and used lines from the story to put on little role play pieces. It is great fun dressing up and we are learning about taking turns and sharing characters and dressing up items. Maths - We are exploring the passing of time through the seasons with teacher. At this station we put picture cards of the seasons in chronological order. We then have another card game where we have items associated with the seasons and we sort them into appropriate categories. We then examine pictures of Autumn, discussing autumnal colours and colour them in. Leaf Rubbing - Here the children are using autumnal colours to make prints using leaf rubbing. We are looking at all the different types of leaves from different trees e.g. oak, sycamore, horse chestnut tree. We then cut the leaves out and used them for our Autumn display. Small World Play - Here children are pretending to be on the farm in Autumn. Our imaginations are having to work hard here. We are taking in the bales in preparation for Winter, using the combine to harvest the crops, picking apples in the orchard, making jam with the blackberries etc. Take a look at our photos..... We made our own jigsaws this week. Cutting can be very tricky for us. Junior Infant cutting skills are getting better each week. Senior Infants are doing a great job too!
Today we made our own personal timeline using items from our past to show how we have grown. We talked about the different activities we did as a baby, toddle and what we like to do now. We took in three items to represent each of these stages and put them in chronological order. It was funny seeing our baby items, we had a great laugh seeing the dummies and a nappy!
We had so much fun using the human number line today. As part of our Maths Improvement Plan we are concentrating on counting activities using the counting stick, number lines etc. We had to mix up the number line and then put it back in the right order. We also focused on what number came before and after a certain number e.g. tell me the number that comes before 3 and the number that comes after 3. It was tricky but we plan on practicing this a lot.
Ready Set Go is a maths initiative which we are implementing in the Infant Rooms. It aims to give children the opportunity to explore and grasp key mathematical skills through hands on activities. Children explore materials freely, see the teacher model mathematical thinking and language and in turn begin using mathematical language themselves. Take a look at our photos below where we are concentrating on matching and sorting activities. We are loving Aistear time! It is such a busy hour of our day but we are learning so much!
Role-Play: Here we are pretending to be a travel agents. we have phones, brochures, things we take on holidays, tickets etc.We are taking on the roles of customers and travel agents and it is so much fun looking in brochures and finding places on the globe. Literacy: We are discussing the poster from Wonderland based on the Airport. Our vocabulary is developing and we are learning all the words surrounding this topic e.g. check in, luggage, information area, car hire, luggage carousel, security, arrivals and departures etc. We are also recalling past holidays and discussing future ones and recording these. Art/Writing: We are making passports at this station. In pairs we are examining each others hair and eye colour. We are writing our names and addresses and drawing our portraits. We will be ale to use our passports in the travel agents. We now know why it is important to have a passport. Construction: Here we are designing a hotel. We are discussing in our group what things are important in a hotel; then when we have a design we build it with the lego. You can see the group below wanted a cinema room. We also made golf buggies and a golf shop for the hotel golf course! What brilliant imaginations we have!!!! We hope you enjoy the pictures below... We were really lucky that it didn't rain on Sports Day. It was so much fun! Our favourite activities were the relay and penalties. We also enjoyed the treat at the end of the day.
We decided to take our art lesson outside a the end of May. We had so much fun using chalks to draw Summer pictures in the yard. They lasted 4 days before the rain came and washed them away! We are now implementing Aistear in the Infant room. During Aistear time we get to work on lots of different activities which cover a range of subjects. Each group go to 4 different stations during the week. The theme we are focusing on this month is Houses and Homes. The four stations include:
We had great fun learning the basis skills of Olympic Handball recently. Our favourite game was "Flush the Toilet", we found it very funny!!
We had a lovely day on Friday before finishing for the Easter Holidays. Ms. Kirk made us Rice-Krispie buns and we had a picnic in the sunshine after P.E. We also got to make chocolate bird nests using Shredded Wheat, cooking chocolate and Mini Eggs. We think they looked very pretty and could not wait to get home to eat them!! One of the Mum's in our room made us a beautiful Easter cake too and we loved it! We hope you all have a fun and safe Easter Break
At the end of March we had been studying suitable clothes for wearing in the rain as we had a lot of Spring Showers. We now know what items are water proof and what items are not. As you can see in our pictures above we decorated some beautiful umbrellas in Art. Try find some waterproof items at home!
However, today (8/4/2013) the sun was shining and we had great fun doing PE in the Astro-Turf pitch. Long may the good weather last. |
