We took in pictures of our families. We discussed ages in our families and also the role of the family unit. We loved telling everyone all about how our families have fun together. Take a look at our Family Gallery outside our classroom door. We planted some vegetables in our school garden last week. We planted beetroot, lettuce and onions. We can't wait to watch them grow.
We have had so much fun dancing with Rosita for an hour each week since we came back from our Christmas holidays! We have learned to line dance and also how to JIVE! Take a look at our pictures ... This month our Áistear activities are revolving around the theme of weather and water. We started by reading Tom Crean's Rabbit. This book focuses on a sailors adventure to discover Antarctica and a pet rabbit which kept him company.
Role Play: in the role play area we are pretending to be on a voyage and re-enacting the story above. We are having to use vocabulary we learned through reading the story such as captain, voyage, galley and cabin. We took in our toy rabbits from home to help us. We also got a new play kitchen which is a great addition for the ships galley. Literacy: Last week at this station we are exploring the story of Tom Crean's Rabbit in more detail. We discussed the chronology of the story, our favourite parts of the book and we recorded these pictorally. Th Apologies!!! Here are some activities which we did before Christmas, sorry we are only getting to put them up now.
Below you can see some of our Christmas art including Christmas wreaths and Winter paintings. You can also see antas visit below. We kept a "good secret" this week in class! We wrote a Christmas card to our parents and went to the Post Office to post them as a surprise for all the Mammy's and Daddy's!! It was so much fun getting to walk down to the Post Office. We have been learning all about how An Post work this week in class so it was exciting to go visit where the post man works. We had to put a stamp on our card to make sure it reached our homes. Take a look at our picture below..
Thanks to Muldoon's for facilitating us on Pension Day!! :) As we have been learning about Houses and Home for the month of November we thought it would be fun to look at a country far removed from our own -INDIA!!
WE have been learning about India with our visiting teacher Ms. O Sullivan. Ms. O Sullivan will be with us until Christmas. We love having two teachers in our room. She is teaching us lots of cool and interesting stuff! We spent a lot of time comparing and contrasting the two countries. Take a look at our pictures below.. In the first one you can see the Irish flag - we were comparing and contrasting it to a picture of the Indian flag In the other picture you can see Indian head scarves, spices and tea leaves and also an Indian elephant. This week and last week we are learning about 2 and 3 D shape. We are finding it quite ricky and confusing. some of the words are very hard to say.
The 2 D shapes we have learned are: square, rectangle, circle and triangle. The 3 D shapes we have learned are: cube, cuboid, sphere and cylinder. Below you can see different activities we did to learn and explore 2 D shapes. You can try spotting 2 D and 3 D shapes about your house to practice. We explored the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears in great detail during the month of November.
Here are some pictures of us exploring the story in the role play area. We really enjoyed using all the props and developing our mathematical language at the same time using the small, medium and large bowls and teddies. Our ability to get into role has greatly improved since we began Áistear time. It is our favourite station of the week! In the pictures you can also see some of our Literacy work. We learned all about the different rooms and parts of the house, we learned new words such as drainpipe, garage, tiles/slates etc. You can also see the lovely masks we made for use during role play. Here we also discussed the characteristics of each of the characters from the story. We have been practicing our listening and speaking skills a lot recently. We are placing emphasis on looking at people when they are speaking and using an appropriate tone in our voices. We have been working in pairs and asking each other questions to show that we are interested in what people have to say. In these pictures we are taking turns at describing our bedroom to our friend. Try practicing your listening and speaking skills at home too! Our theme this month is Houses and Homes. Our stations this month include:
Role Play - Here groups have the choice of being builders on a construction site or role playing the story of Goldilocks and the three bears. We are getting better at utilizing the role pay area as we have been doing a lot of improvisational drama through the English Programme - Wonderland. We use our masks from the Junk Art station when we are pretending to be bears. When we are imagining the building site, we use a lot of vocabulary which builders use, it is great fun being a cross boss!!! Art - Firstly each group got to make the sitting room from Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We explored how to make a soft chair, a hard chair and a chair which was just right.! We also used paper plates to make bear masks, we had to decide for ourselves what we would use to ensure we could hold masks to our faces in the role play area, Some of us used straws and others used lollypop sticks. Design and build - At this station we pretended to be architects at work. We looked at floor plans of houses and read the house maps in pairs. We then drew our own floor plans deciding what rooms are vital to a house design. We then used Lego to bring our floor plans to life. Literacy - Ms. Kirk usually spends a lot of time at this group developing vocabulary and plays Oral Language games with us. We have been looking at different types of housing which exist in Ireland such as bungalows, detached and semi detached housing, flats and terraced homes. We then explored rooms within houses on a poster and discussed activities which happen in certain rooms. We then completed a worksheet which shows activities which happen inside and outside the home. We also played memory games and developed our describing skills. Other activities: This station was an SESE station where we had to decide what items a builder needs for his work and those which he doesn't need. We cut theses out to develop our cutting skills and stuck the items around a picture of a builder. Take a look at our pictures!! Below you can see out Halloween and Autumn Áistear work.
Art - We sang the song Dingle Dangle Scarecrow and learned why farmers have scarecrows in their fields. We then used fabric and fiber to decorate out own scarecrows to hang in our Autumn display. Literacy - We read and discussed Room on the Broom. We looked at the rhyming words in the story too. After that we discussed what potions are and we filled in an "order from" for the imaginary potion we want. This was great fun. Role Play - We pretended we were Halloween characters in the role play area. Miss Kirk has got us a witches hat, cloak, masks etc to use next week, we cannot wait to enter this scary land!!! Cutting skills - We used our cutting skills to cut and paste Halloween images and made a collage of our own. We are going to put all of our Áistear work in a special folder and sent it home at Christmas for our parents to see. We examined all the different types of families that exist in our classroom. We loved telling the class about our family members and how they are related to us. Look at our pictures below - in the pictures we are telling our partner who everyone is and using our listening skills. |
