We have also been getting to play with the sand and water trays during Free-Play.
This week we have been exploring capacity in class. We explored full and empty containers. We then stretched our brains by firstly estimating how many cups it would take to fill different containers and then we measured to see how close our estimate was. This is a game anyone can play at home and a perfect bath-time game.
We have also been getting to play with the sand and water trays during Free-Play. We are really enjoying our maths stations every Thursday morning. Today we made a lot of changes to our stations.
Station 1: 2D and 3D shape. At this station we had to help poor Sooty (the puppet), as he was finding it very hard to tell the difference between his shapes. We had great fun making 2D shapes using match-sticks, lolly-sticks, pipe cleaners and wool. We also sorted lots of everyday 3D objects into sets of objects that roll and set that don't. We now know about circles, rectangles, squares and triangles; and also about cubes, cuboids, cylinders and spheres. Station 2: Spatial Awareness. This station can be quite tricky. We used posters to develop our language of above, below, beside, in, out, right and left. We played the "Hokey Pokey" to try learn the difference between our right and our left. We are going to try practicing this at home. Station 3: Independent Station. Here we matched number pictures to numerals. We also used white boards and peg boards to practice our number formation. WE did very well at working independently. Today we held a St. Patrick's day afternoon in the infant classroom. All children took in green, white and orange foods. We wore our masks that we made in Art class this week. Fr. Connaughton called into us and we remembered why we celebrate this occasion. We hope you all enjoy the parades!!
We are feeling the love in the infant room. Ms. Kirk had a busy morning washing our red feet!! We cannot wait to give these cards to the ones we love. We had great fun this morning at our Paired Reading session. We hope our Mammies and Daddies enjoyed it too! See you next Wednesday for the next session!
As part of our School Improvement Plan we are focusing on Oral Language Development. In our classroom, each month, we are going to have a show and tell week based around our topic of the month (covered in the Wonderland programme). Last week we focused on the topic "Our Favourite Toy". Part of our homework was to practice using descriptive vocabulary in perperation for our 2 minute slot in front of the class. We all did so well and are very proud of ourselves. In the picture is our Yellow Group with their props. We loved standing on the special chair!!! We are learning about things that can be pushed and pulled. We made clay balls and painted them today. We cannot wait to use them in our experiment next week. We were so excited today when Santa visited us!!! He gave us sweets and told us to be in bed early on Christmas Eve!! We must have been very good to get a visit! We really enjoyed performing our class play! It was called whoops a daisy angel! We loved the songs. We hope you enjoyed it too! We are delighted that we were class of the month for September. We are working really hard at school, having lots of fun and making lots of friends. We win the trophy Medal Man and got a certificate for our classroom door! We are having great fun in our class and learning lots during our station teaching. We play different maths games and learn new concepts every Thursday. This week is Maths Week. We have been busy playing different counting games all week. Our favourite is Blast Off! On Thursday Ms. Carroll and other helpers in our school come into our room and we all get to partake in a variety of maths activities. It is a very busy hour but we really enjoy it and learn lots.
