Our Annual Badminton Tournament took place throughout the month of December. We have really improved our skills and really enjoyed it. See below for photos of 5th and 6th class winners! Well done to all involved!
We hope you are all having a good year so far. We have participated in so many activities! It is now very close to Christmas and we can’t wait! Is everyone excited about Santa coming? Hope you all have written your letters to him. In the Christmas season, we should remember those who are less unfortunate than ourselves. Everyone deserves to have a nice Christmas so it is a good idea to help the poor. We can donate money or non-perishable food to the various charities that help those in need, but we should also pray for them and especially the homeless. The Shoe Box appeal was great success sand we collected 70 boxes for this worthy cause.
It is now four months since we started in our new classes. We have been very busy and have already made a load of memories! Preparations have begun for Secondary School and we are studying really hard as this will be a big step to a new part of our lives. One of our classmates, Elze O’ Connell, has moved to Dublin and we miss her! The Junior Infants have all settled in well and they are enjoying school life. Some 6th Class pupils organise games for them at break-time. There is a student teacher, Ms. Mooney, working in their classroom. She is a past pupil of Drumconrath N.S. and it is lovely to welcome her back here in a different role. It’s hard to believe that some day these infants will be editors! Our Christmas Carol Service was held in St. Pater & Pauls Church, Drumconrath, last Friday. It was absolutely brilliant! Hope you all enjoyed it! We would like to thank all our teachers for organising it. Some of us played music, sang carols, danced and recited poetry. We are such a talented group of pupils! The rehearsals were great fun, though we practised really hard to make this Carol Service a great success. On Monday, we visited Kilmainhamwood Nursing Home and performed for the patients. The Nativity Play, involving Junior and Senior Infants, was beautiful and each pupil performed so well! Well Done! Ms. Keenan on a fabulous Nativity Play.! Last week, the entire school went to the Iontas Theatre, Castleblayney, to see the pantomime, ‘Beauty and the Beast’. Deirdre Byrne and Nikita Daly were among the cast. It was so entertaining! We met one of the actors, past pupil, Daniel Myles, after the production. All the classrooms have lovely Christmas trees, decorations and cribs on display. This is making us all feel so excited and festive! Doesn’t it feel great? We made our own Christmas Advent Wreath this year and Fr. Connaughton allowed us to pick holly, palm and shrubs from his garden to make it. The Silver Circle Draw was a great success and we raised almost €4000 in this fundraiser. The money will be used to fund various activities during the school year. Thank you all for selling lines and thanks to all who bought lines. We had loads of extra prizes for the final draw and it was great fun watching so many of our pupils winning. Parent/Teacher meetings were held in the school in November. Hope you all got good reports. Our Confirmation Enrolment Ceremony was held on December 2nd – the first day of Advent. It was a beautiful ceremony. We are all involved in it and most of our sponsors attended. We are now one step closer to making our Confirmation. Confirmation Day is on the 18th May 2018. Peace Proms will be taking place in the New Year. Pupils in 4th & 5th Class have been learning some lovely, new songs and actions this year. Rosita taught each class how to dance. Her lessons were great and it was such fun dancing to Country and Western Music! Swimming lessons will begin in the New Year. We are an active school! Food Dudes was held in the school during this past term and it gave us all a chance to try eating various fruit and vegetables and this encouraged us to eat healthy lunches. We are presented with certificates for participating. The Christmas Badminton Tournament was held and was a great success. The finals were held last week. During Science week, a scientist did workshops in each class and it was very interesting. Deirdre Mallon is teaching us gardening. We wish to thank her for this. We have begun studying for the annual Ardee Credit Union Quiz. Hopefully we can be as successful as last year, maybe even better! Christmas is the season to be jolly, we hope you all have a wonderful Christmas time and a Happy New Year! Slan go Fóill. Rang VI. Merry Christmas from Drumconrath N.S. Nollaig Shona, daoibh go léir! Dia daoibh go léir!
History has been made in Drumconrath N.S. as we have not just one team, but two teams, who have qualified for the Credit Union Quiz National Finals. These were held last Sunday 2nd April in the R.D.S in Dublin. Our teams are as follows: U-11: Oisín Reilly (Captain), Sophie Clarke, Muireann Mc Mahon, Shauna Carolan. U-13: Peter Griffin (Captain), Aaron Tighe, Adam Mc Gahan, Oran Mc Mahon. These two teams came 1st in the local Ardee C.U. Quiz competition in January. They represented this area at Chapters Final Level in Nuremore a few weeks ago. The U-11s came 1st, and the U-13s came 2nd. It was an amazing achievement as there were twenty-one teams in each competition. We in Drumconrath N.S. are extremely proud of our two teams. Their photos were in the Meath Chronicle and Ardee Credit Union have congratulated us on our success and sponsored a bus to bring the teams and family members to the R.D.S. We wish to thank them for their support!! We had a wonderful day at the National Finals and are so proud that our Under 13 team came 4th in Ireland and our Under 11’s came 9th. The Book Fair was held in the school recently. We just love when this annual event happens and we can choose from a wide variety and selection of books if we wish to make a purchase. Also each class benefits from the sales and a total of €106 worth of books were presented to each class group. On World Book Day, 5th and 6th Class pupils read stories to the Infants. Both the Senior and Junior pupils enjoyed this. It was a lovely experience to work with the younger pupils and encourage them to read for fun. Fifth Class pupils performed at the Peace Proms Concert in February. They learned a varied selection of songs and thoroughly enjoyed the day! We, in 6th Class, have completed our Assessment Tests for Secondary School and are now preparing for our Confirmation. We attend morning Mass, as a class group once a week and participate in Adoration Reflection on a rota basis. The “Be My Witness” programme began last week and we thank Fr. Connaughton and Mrs Carolan, who organise this and also our parent volunteers, who run the programme and encourage us to become involved in group discussion and guide us through our preparation for the Sacrament. Our Confirmation Day is the 25th of May in Drumconrath Church at 11.00am. Daffodil Day was held on Friday 24th March. We had a Non-Uniform Day and some pupils dressed up in fancy dress costumes. We raised €250 for the Irish Cancer Society. It’s a long running custom in our school and supporting this great cause is so worthwhile. Three past pupils, Chelsea Farrell and Naomi Daly and Darragh Dunne were on work experience in our school and were a great help to all classes. Rugby coaching is underway for 4th, 5th and 6th classes. Liam is our coach and we hope to participate in a Rugby Competition later on in the year. Swimming lessons are completed and pupils were awarded with their certificates. The grades get higher each year. Congratulations to all! We had a lovely Mass for Grandparents Day and some of our Grandparents were involved in the Church Ceremony. For St. Brigid’s Day we made crosses for the Sick of the Parish. On Pancake Tuesday, each child in the school got a pancake for lunch. We participated in F.A.I’s 5 a-side soccer competition for Girls and Boys at the M.D.L in Navan during March. The Gaelic League is in progress. We are enjoying all these sports. The R.S.E Programme has begun and we are learning so much about the Human Body and Ourselves. 6th Class had a Development Day recently. Pupils from 6th Class in Meath Hill joined us for this. We learned so much about the transition to Secondary School and the challenges that awaits us in as we grow up into young adults. We thoroughly enjoyed this day! Our teachers are so proud of all our work and they organised a big surprise for us last month. During Lunch Time, we received sausages, chicken goujons, wedges and chicken chunks – a total surprise! None of the pupils knew about it beforehand. The food was delicious! Thank you teachers! We have been busy in our Art classes during this past term and for St. Patricks Day everyone had colourful Art items to bring home. Then we had Mother’s Day. We, as children, really appreciate everything they do for us. Mrs Patterson, who lives in this community, became a Centenarian – 100 years old – a few weeks ago. We designed a card for her birthday and Katie and Kerrie presented this to her the day before her birthday. She was delighted to receive it! Easter Art lessons are in progress now as we look forward to our holidays. Hope you all kept your Lenten Promises. Enjoy the Easter Eggs! See below for some photos of the activities in our room!!! We have had such a great time during our badminton league. We congratulate everyone who took part and the winners and runners-up. See photos below.
Our School Chronicle is complete and ready for printing, so the Christmas 2016 edition will be on sale on Monday 19thDecember. Hope you all enjoy reading the various sections and our school news.
Sixth Class had their Confirmation Enrolment Ceremony on the first day of Advent, as is tradition. We signed our names as they were read aloud in church and promised to prepare for Confirmation by praying, going to Mass each weekend and abiding by our Class Guidelines for Christian Living. It was a beautiful ceremony! Our parents, sponsors and family members were there to support us. Our Baptismal Candles were lit from the Paschal Candles and passed on to us by our sponsors/parents as a sign of the Faith being passed on. This was a lovely part of the ceremony. Our Annual Christmas Badminton tournament is in full swing . It is played on a round -robin basis, so we get lots of games each. The finals will be held on Wednesday 21st December. There are four groups-6th Class Girls/6th Class Boys/5th Class Girls/5th Class Boys. The standard is quite high and the games are very competitive! Our Christmas Carol Service will be held in St. Peter & Paul’s Church, Drumconrath on Friday 16th December. Please come to this as we are preparing hard and there is a wide variety of talent on display in this beautiful church setting. We made some beautiful Christmas cards out of recycled materials. Have a look at these amazing creations on our website. Also on display are our “Colour Wheels”. We mixed primary colours to achieve secondary colours and then mixed all these new colours together to see what happens when colours “meet and merge”. Congratulations to Niamh Dunne, who won the Water Slogan Competition . Her entry was very catchy! It read “HERE IN DRUMCONRATH SCHOOL, SAVING WATER IS OUR RULE! Have a look at our beautiful Advent wreath, made by Breege Duff for our classroom. We put up a Christmas Tree and made some decorations. Our crib is central to all of this as it reminds us of the Birth of Jesus on Christmas Day. The Silver Circle Draw was a huge success and over 4,400 euro was raised. A big thank you to all who supported this fundraiser! Nollaig Shona daoibh go léir! We have been very busy in 5th and 6th Class designing and building bridges. We used newspapers, K'nex , sellotape etc. Our bridges are very strong and can hold numerous bottles of water. Master Reid helped us with these projects and they focused on our maths skills and artistic skills. Have a look at some of our photos below.
